Passive In-Building solutions from SPINNER enable excellent mobile reception inside buildings – with a host of economic and environmental benefits.
Two trends have greatly accelerated in recent years: stricter requirements for sustainably constructing and operating buildings and greater cost awareness.
Modern buildings are characterized by well-insulating constructions involving reinforced steel or prefabricated timber hybrid materials with metallized glazed exteriors. The drawback of these sturdy structures is that they greatly attenuate signals passing through them, which makes it that much more difficult to use mobile phones inside. It’s therefore virtually impossible to achieve reliable network coverage without implementing your own in-building wireless solution. Yet over 80% of mobile data traffic is generated inside buildings. So how can you ensure uninterrupted mobile reception with an acceptable bandwidth?
Signal attenuation in buildings
The passive In-Building system available from SPINNER excels with resource-conserving installation and sustainable operation. It bundles the signals of all network operators without requiring the use of active technology or a power supply, and accomplishes this with only negligible losses. The bundled signals are then passively distributed in the building via a common antenna network without the need for any active repeaters.
The SPINNER solution supports shared distribution of all frequencies and mobile technologies from 2G to 5G, and as a result only a single antenna is required for all of them. Its modular design also makes it easy to extend in-building solutions later to flexibly integrate additional operators, sectors, and frequency ranges.

Passive solutions from SPINNER cost over a third less to install than active solutions. And the potential savings are even greater during operation, because passive solutions don’t require any electric power and are maintenance-free into the bargain. Plus, since they contain no electronic components, there are no limits on how long they can continue operating. This means no costs for operating, monitoring, maintaining, and updating the system or additional services. If and when it is no longer needed, all of its parts can be easily recycled and reused in other applications.
Since the founding of the first independent sustainable building associations (DGNB, LEED, BREEAM, C2C etc.), relevant criteria have been increasingly applied to the construction of new buildings. They are based on a holistic understanding of sustainability that merges respect for the environment, safety for people, and cost-effectiveness. Other facilities, like WiredScore for example, improve digital connectivity and the smart technologies used in buildings. A crucial criterion for this is having one’s own in-building mobile communications system.
