The bar is being steadily raised for the energy yield, efficiency and reliability of wind turbines. And this in turn is increasing the importance of dependable data transmission between the rotor blades and the controller in the nacelle.
Conventional, high-maintenance contacting slip ring sets by themselves are no longer adequate for pitch control, for well-known reasons. This is driving a strong trend toward the use of fiber-optic rotary joints.
SPINNER meets this need with fiber-optic rotary joints that have been specially designed to meet requirements in the wind energy market and optimize data transmission.
Single-channel SM/MM fiber optic rotary joint - IP68
These joints have been specifically designed to enable their use in harsh and wet environments. Produced in cleanrooms and available in single mode and multimode versions, they boast an IP68 rating and a maintenance-free service life of 600 million revolutions at up to 30 rpm. Their optical metrics, including a typical return loss of 40 dB even in the multimode models, are also excellent, and the optical fibers are protected by Kevlar sheathing as a matter of course.
