As the number of wind turbines in use grows, two things are becoming more and more important to their manufacturers and owners: highly efficient power generation and very cost-effective operation, also at greater outputs.
On the one hand, it is essential to ensure highly reliable high-speed data transfer between the rotor blades and the control electronics in the nacelle so the system can responsible nimbly to changing environmental conditions. On the other, operators insist on capturing very detailed data for monitoring and controlling the overall installation.
SPINNER offers two reliable solutions for data transmission in rotating systems: contactless electronic and fiber-optic joints.
One advantage of electronic rotary joints is that they are contactless and therefore maintenance-free. They work reliably at data rates up to 1 GBit/s. They can be supplied as a component of pitch-control slip ring systems or as standalone modules with a free inner diameter of up to 300 mm.
Electronic rotary joints from SPINNER support a wide range of IEEE 802.3-based protocols, including Powerlink, Ethercat, Profinet and Sercos III. They also transmit Profibus and CAN bus protocols without any errors whatsoever.
Alternatively, data can be transmitted between the rotor blades and nacelle via optical fibers.
SPINNER offers fiber-optic rotary couplings that have been optimized for use in harsh and moist environments. They are available in single-mode and multimode versions with an IP65-rated enclosure. To ensure high long-term reliability, they have been specially designed to be resistant to icing and freezing rain. Their service life amounts to 200 million revolutions at 30 rpm within a temperature range from -40 to +85°C.
